In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the XM are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Urus doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The BMW XM has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Urus doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The XM has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Urus doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Both the XM and the Urus have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The BMW XM weighs 568 to 1351 pounds more than the Lamborghini Urus. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The XM comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Urus’ 3-year basic warranty expires 1 year sooner.

There are almost 9 times as many BMW dealers as there are Lamborghini dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the XM’s warranty.

The XM’s 4.4 turbo V8 hybrid produces 81 more horsepower (738 vs. 657) and 111 lbs.-ft. more torque (738 vs. 627) than the Urus’ standard 4.0 turbo V8. The XM’s 4.4 turbo V8 hybrid produces 148 lbs.-ft. more torque (738 vs. 590) than the Urus SE’s standard 4.0 turbo V8 hybrid.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the BMW XM higher (6 out of 10) than the Lamborghini Urus (2). This means the XM produces up to 27.7 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Urus every 15,000 miles.

The XM stops shorter than the Urus:

The XM’s standard 275/40R22 front and 315/35R22 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series front and 35 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Urus’ standard 45 series front and 40 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the XM has standard 22-inch wheels. Smaller 21-inch wheels are standard on the Urus.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the XM’s wheelbase is 4 inches longer than on the Urus S (122.2 inches vs. 118.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the XM is 1.1 inches wider in the front than the average track on the Urus.

The XM’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (48.9% to 51.1%) than the Urus’ (54% to 46%). This gives the XM more stable handling and braking.

For greater off-road capability the XM has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Urus (8.7 vs. 8.4 inches), allowing the XM to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The front grille of the XM uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Urus doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The XM has 1.4 inches more front shoulder room, .8 inches more rear headroom, .3 inches more rear legroom and 1 inch more rear shoulder room than the Urus.

The XM has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Urus with its rear seat folded (64.3 vs. 56.4 cubic feet).

The XM’s cargo area is larger than the Urus’ in almost every dimension:

The XM has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Urus doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the XM to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Urus doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the XM has a standard rear wiper. The Urus doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the XM has standard extendable sun visors. The Urus doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The XM has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the Urus.

The BMW XM outsold the Lamborghini Urus by 19% during 2024.
